7well: Swell

From Cape Town, South Africa, Christopher Jenner was surrounded by the incredible beauty of his home country which continues to be his primary stimulus today. In his words,”Mother nature is the ultimate designer”. He is a graduate of the Johannesburg School of Art and the Boston School of Design. Towards the end of 2010, he finally established his own studio in London to explore the strategic relationship between branding and design with a refined style through storytelling to build emotion! With the acclaimed launch of the Swell collection at the Salone del Mobile in 2012, the studio has embarked on a new chapter, creating, manufacturing and distributing a selection of sub-brands to discerning clients Globally via the Christopher Jenner web shop and a select group of galleries and showrooms.

Taken their inspiration from childhood play, English carriages and classic furniture to reinterpret the established canon of forms and shape, let’s take look to these 7 new wells of the World of Design. For our”But what is the process?” visitors, we also added the words of the designer himself!

“Combing cutting edge technology, time-honed skills and the total dedication of English craftsman, this is an unprecedented piece of furniture.

Using a 5 axis robotic milling machine, we’ve created a 6mm carcass from a solid section of 130mm aluminum.
The 83 (21 for the model Side Table) button holes and leg trumpets are individually milled, one by one. Prior to painting we finish each table by hand to ensure an immaculate surface application.

After a final inspection each piece is hand sprayed with a patented Technicoat multiple layered Pearlescent Metallic Polyester/ Acrylic Powder Coating, a technique which incorporates an innovative, technically advanced base layer and a bespoke colour mix to provide a unique depth and aesthetic quality which reflects light and adds a unique emotional depth.

Each glass leg is hand blown and fitted with a male thread, screwing directly into the female trumpet. Lastly we take 83 hand crafted aluminum buttons finished in our unique paint, thread them with inverted suede string and hand tie each one to the underside of the table, the remaining threads are cut at random.

“The inviting curves of this highly engineered and hand crafted seating collection resembles the form of a classic riding saddle. Employing a flat bed cnc machine, a 4mm radius of the very finest grade aluminium is milled to each side to create the half circle bluenose edge. On the underside we mill a 4mm radius groove exactly in relation to the contour, each leather attachment hole is then hand drilled to allow for the cushion fixing.

Prior to the paint process we finish each frame by hand to ensure the best possible application surface. After a final inspection each piece is hand sprayed with a patented Technicoat multiple layered Pearlescent Metallic Polyester/ Acrylic Powder Coating, a technique which incorporates an innovative, technically advanced base layer and a bespoke colour mix to provide a unique depth and aesthetic quality which reflects light and adds a special depth of touch and emotion. We work with 1.5mm ply overlaid 9 times to develop a base and added structural support for the upholstery. Each cushion is formed and buttoned in the English style reminiscent of 18th century carriages, using the finest Italian Leather, closed cell foam and hand made buttons finished in Technicote. The finished cushioning is threaded to the main frame with hand cut leather string.

Each Bench, Ottoman and Stool is fitted with four 4 x m3 hand turned half cut onion feet in raw Aluminium.

In a nod to the infinite joy of handcrafted luxury we finish each piece with seven through pulled, hand tied bows in leather.

The two hand crafted Swell lamps are engineered within a whisper of a spaceship. We approached many manufacturers with the design and were greeted with an unanimous‘not possible’.

The metal components -15 Individually hand turned pieces are routed, drilled and threaded to build an intensely technical piece of furniture that’s the antithesis of mechanised production. Each component is exactingly refinished to deliver a product of impeccable bespoke quality. The metal pieces are hand sprayed with a patented Technicoat multiple layered Pearlescent Metallic Polyester/ Acrylic Powder Coating, a system that incorporates an innovative technically advanced base layer to provide a unique depth and aesthetic quality that reflects light and adds a depth of emotion. The scale of the glass shade pushes traditional hand blowing techniques and raw molten glass beyond the edge of assumed possibility. The raw shades are sandblasted to create a matt textured surface in direct contradiction to the immaculately smooth metallic components.

Finally working with a diamond grinder we drill 12 optical lenses into the radius allowing the viewer to penetrate deep within. All electrical components are assembled in the United Kingdom using a bespoke hand-pull mechanism and platted fabric cabling from Northern Ireland.

The lamp base is finished with 4 x m3 hand turned cut onion feet in raw Aluminium.
