Since its inception in 1954,”Chamber of Architects of Turkey” has been conductiong a highly involved struggle till today aimed at developing the architectural culture, protecting the historical heritage and improving the quality of life. In order to add a new dimension to these efforts, it has been decided to initiate an organization from 2007 onwards under the title of”Istanbul International Architecture and Urban Films Festival” whose objective is to ensure an active participation of everyone who is interested in the field.

The film festival was organized for the World Architecture Day in the scope of the”Architecture and Urban Festival” realized by the Istanbul Metroplitan Branch of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey. World Architecture Day is celebrated jointly by 1.400.000 global members of the International Union of Architects (UIA) annually on each first Monday of the October.

This festival which will be carried out on between 3-9 October 2011 aiming at sponsoring films produced on architectural and urban issues, encouraging new productions, and exposing admirable examples of films to the audience organize the competition and grants rewards in two categories, National and International. Additionally, it foresees to introduce Turkey and its architectural culture to a wide range of public, by providing opportunities to the interested architects, films directors and related experts to meet in Istanbul.

In the festival which accepts only Documentary and Animation films, there will be held a competition among the films from Turkey and abroad which can pass the pre-selection. All selected films will be screened during the festival week. At the same time, discussion sessions and other activities related to the festival’s subject will be held in order to provide an interchange of ideas among the participants.

The festival will consist of four main sections:
1.National Documentary and Animation Films Competition
Around 20 films with English subtitles that will be selected from among those submitted to the national documentary and animation films competition open to all entries and organized around the theme of”Architecture and City” shall be accepted for the program of film shows. The best film that will be selected from among these shall be awarded a prize. A further selection of 5 films shall represent Turkey in the international competition section.
2.International Documentary and Animation Films Competition
Films on the theme of”Architecture and City” shall participate within the documentary and animation field of the competition, which is being anounced through the member sections of the countries belonging to the UIA and their web sites.
3.Program of Film Screenings
The film screenings shall be realized simultaneously at the two separate halls on ther European and Anatolian sides. Additionally, performances will be held at the conference hall of the Chamber of Architects, as well as the theatres and auditoriums of the universities which have faculties of architecture. If and when the film producers and the film directors shall be present at these halls, brief discussion sessions will follow the film screenings.
4.Discussion Sessions and Panels
Parallel with the film screenings, discussion sessions and panels with invited guests shall be organized with the purpose of preparing occasions in which the accumulated experiences of the artists shall be shared with the audience.
