Harmonious Coexistence Of City And Nature…

Today i will take you to a garden completed by Martha Schwartz Partners as part of the2011 Xi’an International Horticultural Expocurrently taking place in China, Chanba grand ecological zone..

A garden in which you will feel like Alice in Wonderland and be mazed with forced perspectives…

Horticulture as activism? I loved this garden and the anti-landscape architect Martha Schwartz so much! Take look at their web-site and read their manifesto;

“Situated at the intersection of landscape, art, and urbanism, Martha Schwartz Partners is committed to the design of urban landscapes and the public realm as the foundation for sustainable cities that are healthy across all aspects and sectors of urban life.”

The main theme of the expo is Eternal Peace& Harmony between Nature& Mankind, Nurturing the Future Earth while the sub-theme is Harmonious Co-existence between City and Nature and the slogan is; “Green leading fashion”

And the owner’s brief specified that the designer should consider the limitations of local building materials and methods, and that the garden should be accessible to the Chinese point of view.

So, the garden is composed mainly of only four elements: traditional grey brick walls and paving, willow trees, mirrors, and bronze bells…

The impression of endless pathways and arches is created by mirrors fixed to the brick walls, which on finding the dark exit corridor are revealed to be one-way glass, allowing a view back to those still lost in the maze…

Enjoy…
