Cafe in the Botanical Gardens by Kollgata Arkitektur

Kollgata Arkitektur have designed the Cafe in the Botanical Gardens located in Akureyri, Iceland.

To commemorate the 150 year birthday of the township of Akureyri and the 100 years of the Botanical gardens of Akureyri, the city council decided to commission a café for the gardens.

The Café’s design was inspired by its surroundings, texture of the botanical gardens with trees and traditional form of the existing buildings of Akureyri.

Large windows are designed in strong visual connection with the vegetation, trees, picnic areas and walkways surrounding the café. One side of the building is mainly a window, resembling the branches of a tree.

In keeping with the Café´s references to older, local materials and building heritage, the restauranteur then added his touch with an odd collection of original furniture from the 50´s and 60´s. The furniture was fabricated by the many furnituremakers in Akureyri at the time. Most of the pieces were donated by local people and companies.
