The Else vase by Kristine Five Malvaer has a graphic motif draped around the vase neck like a bold piece of jewelry. The motif both emphasizes and challenges the shape of the object.
The vase explores the variation between the subtle differences in color and the contrast between glossy and matte. This is done by the use of two colored layers with related shades. The upper part of the object shows the glossy top color, while the lower part is sandblasted to reveal the bottom layer of color.
Else is one of three vases in the experiment Graphic Vases, the other two being Marie and Gro. The experiment is a collaboration between Kristine Five Melvær and the Norwegian glass manufacturer Magnor Glassverk, exhibited for the first time at the Verdi exhibition at Norway Designs in Oslo September 2014. The vases explore the tension and the relationship between the three-dimensional shapes and graphic surfaces of the objects. The aim is to bring together Melværs two disciplines of industrial design and graphic design, while utilizing the different techniques used by the skilled glass blowers at Magnor Glassverk.
