Education… On which subject? At what age? Where? How conscious? Leading towards what? And when would it end?

What were we educated on? How much has stuck with us? Did it really help us in life?

Let us admit that it has taken us a long time since we have each started our education.. And it is an ongoing process, as there is really not a defined period for learning, or a defined time span; as long as what we have really learned is meaningful in our lives. We should patiently go on reading and learning, despite the long school years we have been through, filled mostly with incoherent details..

Are we really aware that there are no other alternatives to the Earth that we live in? Or is it still the globe that we saw as kids with the explanation that it is the third planet from the Sun and currently the only astronomical body where life is known to exist?

It might somewhat be difficult to remember that the Earth has existed for over 4 billion years; yet it should not be that difficult to admit that the Earth’s natural resources have been consumed at a much higher rate during the last century; and to realize that several natural and nuclear disasters, a consequence of this oblivious consumption may lead us to the crack of doom depicted in several Hollywood movies much earlier than predicted…

I have discovered a web site,Worldometers, for those of you who believe and trust in numbers, where real time statistics are displayed on the world population, economy, telecommunication, social media, the environment, food and water supplies, energy resources and health and suggest that you all take a good look at it! It is quite disturbing to see the course of events and the increasing or decreasing numbers: the rapid decrease in the woodland and fossil fuels and the very steep increase in carbon emission, access to food and clean water and the appalling disease and death rates due to lack of food and water. I will not go into further details, as I really believe that all individuals should check it themselves and maybe start thinking about how to contribute…

Worldometers also indicates that there are now 192 members of theUnited Nations, the largest global organization!

In addition to their mission of keeping peace throughout the world and developing friendly relations among nations; the U.N works on a broad range of fundamental issues, from sustainable development, environment and refugees protection, disaster relief, counter terrorism, disarmament and non-proliferation to promoting democracy, human rights, gender equality and the advancement of women, governance, economic and social development and international health, clearing landmines, expanding food production, and furthermore, in order to achieve its goals and coordinate efforts for a safer world for this and future generations.

This week, I have attended the Sustainability Academy held by Odak Danışmanlık, a reputable company in Turkey known for their organizations on sustainability; and the UNDP, United Nations Development Programme. The Sustainability Academy is a series of educational seminars open to the public and held at the Boğaziçi University and I personally believe that everyone involved should definitely participate!

Most of the topics of the seminar were presented by UNDP officers, and the emphasis was on sustainable development, low carbon economy, green development, green business, eco efficency, biodiversity andclimate change adaptation strategies. It was nice to see the high number of participants and I, for one, am impatiently awaiting the“Product Sustainability“ programme to be held on April 20th. The brief summary of what I have learned from the seminar would be how important awareness and individual actions are; and that the social responsibility of raising awareness levels is vital.

It is now up to you, as individuals, to use the power of the internet and the referenced links, continue your education and start contributing for a better World! As the Spanish have put it, Un Mendo Mejor es Posible…
