Sydney based architecture practice Fox Johnston have designed the Balmain House in Sydney, Australia.
Located in a small inner city block between 14 adjacent properties, the house was designed to provide simple, functional, generous, private and light-filled living spaces for a young family.
Spatial options have been optimized and a great dialogue has been improved within the interior areas. Each downstairs living room – interior and exterior – ‘borrows’ space from the other to maximize volume, light and air.
The upstairs spaces have been carefully shaped and designed to preserve neighbouring views and sunshine, to open the house to sunlight and ventilation, and to provide views to garden vistas and the surrounding harbour and Anzac Bridge views.
The project utilises recycled and sustainable building products. The natural material palette and timber surfaces create warm spaces to live.
